Corporate Insolvency and Small Business

A 90-minute Zoom session brought to you by Financial Counselling Australia’s Small Business Debt Helpline, for specialist and aspiring small business FCs and RFCs nationally, free of charge.

Many small businesses operate within a company structure (corporation). What happens when they can’t pay their debts? Just like bankruptcy for individuals, corporate insolvency processes take control of the assets and income of a business in order to distribute money to creditors.

This training session presented by Small Business Debt Helpline staff Paul Gillett and Robyn Harris will provide an introduction to key concepts to help specialist and aspiring small business financial counsellors understand the nature of corporate insolvency. The presenters will be joined by Small Business Debt Helpline insolvency specialist Ryan McIlveen.

  • What is a corporation?
  • What is corporate insolvency?
  • What is liquidation?
  • What do insolvency practitioners do?
  • What is deregistration of a corporation?
  • How can a business owner wind up their struggling company?
  • What debts will not be extinguished by corporate insolvency?
  • What is the role of FCs in this space?

These concepts will be illustrated with real-life stories of business owners dealing with their own insolvent corporations, and the presentation will conclude with time for questions from attendees. The training will be 90 minutes long and will be held on two separate occasions:

  • Wednesday 20 October 2021 at 11am EST
  • Thursday 21 October 2021 at 11am EST

Each session will repeat the same agenda, with the same topics being discussed, so attendees need attend only one of the two sessions. Each session will be conducted on Zoom and can accommodate up to 500 attendees.
